Dundee Waterfront
Client Brief
Dundee City Council and V&A Dundee sought innovative ways to engage the public and stakeholders in their ambitious waterfront redevelopment project prior to construction. The aim was multifaceted:
Raise awareness of the development and generate enthusiasm within the local community.
Cultivate a sense of ownership and support for the project.
Attract interest from potential developers and investors.
To achieve these objectives, the client commissioned Luma to develop a series of compelling visuals and animations, complemented by an interactive mobile application accessible to the public.
Luma Approach
Understanding the dynamic nature of the design process, Luma collaborated closely with Dundee City Planners, V&A Dundee and Kengo Kuma Architects throughout the project's design and development phases.
The core focus was on creating a user-friendly mobile application available on both iOS and Android platforms. This allowed anyone to virtually explore the future waterfront development, gaining insights into its planned facilities and new public spaces.
Adding an innovative layer of engagement, the app incorporated Augmented Reality (AR) functionality. Users visiting the V&A Dundee construction site could point their devices at specially designed graphics on the site hoarding, revealing unique augmented views of the completed building in situ.
Delivery
The innovative 3D app successfully brought the V&A Dundee waterfront development to life, vividly portraying the museum as a dynamic hub for major exhibitions celebrating design heritage while fostering contemporary talent.
“This app helps bring V&A Dundee and its superb location on the waterfront at the very heart of the city to life in a fun and inspiring way. In creating Scotland's first design museum, we want to embrace the latest interactive digital technologies to showcase and celebrate the best of Scottish innovation and design.”
- Philip Long - Director of V&A Dundee
By highlighting its commitment to innovation, the app solidified the museum's position as a vital cultural landmark for Scotland. The CG images and animations played a crucial role in raising awareness and generating excitement throughout the construction process.
“The 3D app is an astonishing piece of technology that unveils how Dundee Waterfront will look in the future. We are expecting a surge in tourism and visitor numbers as the waterfront develops, so the app will allow prospective visitors or investors a chance to virtually visit and experience Dundee Waterfront now”
- Mike Galloway, Director of City Development at Dundee City Council
