Edinburgh Anatomical Museum

Client Brief

The University of Edinburgh’s Anatomy department sought to enhance public access to their world-renowned Anatomical Museum, a treasure trove of anatomical specimens and historical artifacts.

Their goal was to create an immersive experience that would allow anyone, regardless of location, to explore the museum's fascinating collections at their leisure.

Embedded Interactive

Luma Approach

We collaborated closely with the Anatomy department to develop a bespoke 3D interactive mobile tour app for the Edinburgh Anatomical Museum. Our team digitally recreated the historic building and several key internal spaces, incorporating detailed panoramic views and an engaging audio-guided tour. This digital experience grants access to areas typically closed to the public, revealing the museum's rich history and scientific significance.

Luma carried out detailed photogrammetry scans and reconstructed numerous iconic specimens from the university’s collection, including the skeleton of notorious murderer William Burke and a cast of King Robert the Bruce's skull.

These detailed 3D models provide an unprecedented opportunity for virtual exploration and interaction with these historical treasures.

Delivery

The resulting app offers a unique and compelling way to experience the Edinburgh Anatomical Museum. Visitors can now explore the museum virtually, learning about its history, scientific significance, and fascinating collection from anywhere in the world.

This innovative project not only increases accessibility but also enhances public understanding and appreciation for anatomical sciences and their place in Edinburgh’s cultural heritage.

The app has been released to a global audience, allowing anyone with an interest in anatomy, history, or simply unique virtual experiences to delve into this captivating museum.
