Sluisbuurt, Amsterdam

Client Brief

The Sluisbuurt project, aimed at revitalising a historically significant district within Amsterdam, presented unique challenges due to its protected heritage status. To effectively navigate these complexities during the planning stages, the Municipality of Amsterdam enlisted Luma with experience in large-scale urban master plans.

LUMA was tasked with creating detailed visualisations that clearly communicated design concepts while ensuring sensitivity to the area's cultural context.

Advanced CGI techniques and realistic renderings were employed to facilitate Public understanding and inform decision-making throughout the planning process, ultimately balancing the goals of revitalisation with the preservation of Amsterdam's historical heritage within the Sluisbuurt district.

Luma Approach

For the Sluisbuurt development in Amsterdam, Luma harnessed the power of virtual reality (VR) and animation to create immersive visualisations. The aim was to provide city planners and the public with a comprehensive understanding of the proposed high-rise living spaces integrated with parks and nature reserves.

While traditional methods relied on physical models and artistic renderings to convey the designer's vision, Luma's innovative solution involved developing an interactive VR model. This allowed the design team to explore the project in intricate detail, while the public could experience a realistic sense of scale and spatial awareness within the proposed environment, gaining a comprehensive understanding of the high-rise living spaces integrated with parks and nature reserves.

Delivery

LUMA's development of specialised tools was instrumental in facilitating positive engagement with stakeholders concerned about the project's impact on heritage assets. These tools contributed significantly to building trust and ultimately played a key role in securing the necessary planning approvals for the project's implementation.

“The level of public opposition to this development was intense, the fiercest I have ever encountered. We needed a special way to show people how it would look and feel and the work by Luma was pivotal in convincing the heritage-defenders that we could be trusted.

Luma's ground-breaking digital model allowed us to feed the community with clear information at every stage of the master plan process. This was always going to be a project with high ambitions and the highly visual nature of the content produced by Luma meant that stakeholders, including the public, could engage with the master plan directly.”
